 Portland Maine Dog Friendly Vacations

Where to Go

Several beaches in the Portland and Casco Bay area permit dogs. If you’re in the mood for some beach-combing with your pooch, head to East End Beach, Old Orchard Beach, Springpoint Beach, or Willard Beach. Dogs are permitted off-leash at Willard beach between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. in the summer months; they may roam off-leash at any time during the winter season.

For another sandy beach outing, head to Scarborough State Park. This park, located several miles south of Portland, overlooks the stunning Saco Bay. From June 15 to September 15, dogs are allowed on the beach off-leash and under voice control from sunrise to 9:00 a.m. and from 5:00 p.m. through the night. During the daytime hours, dogs are not permitted on the beach. During the off-season, dogs may roam the beach off-leash at any time, provided that they are under strict voice control.

Portland Head Light Park and Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth are other dog-friendly destinations, as is Mackworth Island in Falmouth. Dogs must be kept on a short leash at these parks. Portland also has numerous off-leash dog parks, including Capisic Pond Park, Hall School Woods, and Pine Grove Park.

If your dog needs emergency veterinary care, the Animal Emergency Clinic is available 24 hours per day to help your pet.

Where to Stay

At the upscale Eastland Park Hotel, in the heart of downtown Portland, your dog gets a special welcome kit with a doggy treat, toy, trash bags, and an informational booklet. Dogs may stay for an additional $25 per night and must be crated if left alone in the room. Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth also gives your pet the highest-quality care for no additional fee. The inn offers a dog walking service and special pet menu at their restaurant.

Where to Eat

Portland features several restaurants with outdoor seating areas for dogs. Go to the Portland Lobster Company, Sebago Brewpub, Farmer’s Table, or Novare Res Bier Cafe for dinner before heading to Beal’s Old-Fashioned Ice Cream for a frozen dessert.
