Downeast Maine Dog Friendly Vacations
Where to Go
Acadia National Park is the jewel of the Downeast and Acadia region of Maine. The park features over 100 miles of hiking trails where you can bring your pet. Dogs must be kept on leashes no longer than 6 feet and cannot swim in lakes, which serve as local water supplies. Although dogs are not allowed on swimming beaches during the summer months, they may play on the beach from October through May.
The Sipayik Trail in Eastport is another great location for dogs. This former railroad corridor is an excellent place to hike with your dog off-leash. If you’re looking for a more adventurous outing, head to Acadia Outfitters in Bar Harbor to rent a canoe. The outfitter welcomes dogs, provided that they wear life jackets.
Roque Bluffs State Park is a perennial favorite with Maine locals. Bring your dog to explore rugged cliffs and rocky shores. Although dogs are not permitted on the sandy beach swimming area, they are allowed throughout the rest of the park.
Farther north in the Downeast and Acadia region is Grand Lake Stream. This area is known for its amazing outdoor activities, including canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and snowshoeing. The Downeast Land Trust owns hundreds of 350,000 acres of land with miles of trails and waterways accessible to dogs.
