Rent
a canoe or kayak and paddle one of the state's scenic lakes, ponds,
rivers or bogs. Numerous watersheds throughout the forests, mountains
and lowlands provide paddlers with water conditions ranging from
gentle currents to raging whitewater. Wilderness trips along the
Allagash, Penobscot, St. John, Moose, St. Croix and Machias rivers
are among the most popular. Primitive campsites are numerous along
these routes, and outfitters, shuttle and rental services are
readily available throughout the state. Always helpful are Registered
Maine Guides who offer guided tours of the inland waterways, and
instruction when needed. Whitewater rafting is just one more possibility
for the adventurous at heart. Experienced guides and outfitters
are highly recommended for these trips, as conditions can be quite
dangerous at times.
