APPALACHIAN TRAIL: A continuous hiking path which covers 2,000 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin Mountain in Maine, the trail crosses through Franklin County and connects with a number of the area's most rugged and scenic peaks. In the Rangeley Lakes region, you can enter the trail on Route 17 at the "Height of Land" or on Route 4, 9 miles southeast of Rangeley. Many other accesses to the A.T. are located throughout the region by means of secondary trails. For further info. and directions, call the Maine Appalachian Trail Club at 207-645-4407.

Rangeley Lakes Region Hiking Trails

ANGEL FALLS: An exceptionally scenic "hanging" falls with the longest single drop (90 feet) in Maine. Located 3.5 miles south of the village of Oquossoc on Route 17, turn right onto the old railroad line (Bemis Track). The trailhead is 11.9 miles on the right. Turn right at the sign, and follow the gravel road past a small pit. Follow the red-blazed marked trail, approximately 1 mile from this point. The trail crosses streams five times, which can become obscure and dangerous at times of high water, so please check for current conditions.



AZISCOHOS (LOWER) MOUNTAIN TRAIL: This trail offers some of the finest lake views in the state. Enter the trail on Route 16, 17.7 miles west of Rangeley and 100 yards south of the Magalloway Bridge at the foot of the Azicohos Dam. The round trip hiking "loop" is approximately 4.9 miles and reaches a summit of 3,186 feet. For more information, call the Rangeley Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce at 207-864-5364.


BALD MOUNTAIN TRAIL: Enter the trail
.8 miles south of Oquossoc off Route 4, on Bald Mountain Road (opposite Bald Mountain Camps). Distance to summit: 1.75 miles. A new 30' look-out tower at the summit offers a spectacular, 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains and lakes. A great hike for families and includes picnic tables on the trail. Summit height: 2,443 feet.


BEMIS TRAIL:
Start from Route 17, in the Oquossoc area, 5.2 miles south of the Shore Drive intersection. Length of trail: 1.5 miles.


BEMIS STREAM TRAIL: Enter the trail on Route 17, a half mile south of the Appalachian Trail crossing. The blue- blazed trail parallels Bemis Stream. Length of trail: 6.1 miles.


CASCADE STREAM GORGE TRAIL: The trailhead is located on Town Hall Road, off Route 4 (opposite South Shore Drive). The trail, a half mile in length, follows the stream through a steep, 2000' rocky gorge, dotted with pools up to 90' deep and a 16' waterfall.


EAST KENNEBAGO MOUNTAIN TRAIL:
10 miles east of Rangeley on Route 16, turn left on the gravel road. Cross the bridge, take a right, at the fork go left, take a second right and park your car. The trail is ideal for mountain bike enthusiasts. Length of trail: Approximately 6 miles round trip. Summit height: 3,791 feet.


FOREST LEGACY TRAIL: This trail can be accessed via water across from Haines Landing, or from Route 16, 9.1 miles from the intersection of Routes 16 and 4 in Oquossoc. The trail is approximately 5 miles long and offers an easy to moderate ridgeline and shoreline loop.


HATCHERY BROOK TRAIL: Located .1 mile on Manor Road off Route 4, just west of the village of Rangeley. This trail is an easy, one mile loop with three scenic, lakeside picnic sites.


HEIGHT OF LAND: One of the most spectacular and unsurpassed vistas in the state of Maine. Enjoy the beautiful views of Mooselookmeguntic Lake and the surrounding mountains. Be sure to bring your camera for this one! Located southest of the village of Oquossoc on Route 17.

 

HUNTER COVE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY: The trail can be entered on Route 4 across from Dodge Pond or from Hunter Cove in the Rangeley Region. This loop network consists of easy hiking trails.


KAMANKEAG POND TRAIL:
Enter the trail at the end of the paved section of Quimby Pond Road in the Rangeley area. . Go 3.5 miles, and turn left at the marker. Follow trail to pond. Length of trail: 5 miles.


MOUNTAIN POND TRAIL:
A 1.5 mile trail through wooded hillsides and forest, that leads you to the edge of the pond. Enter from South Shore Drive, a half mile west of the Rangeley Lake State Park entrance. OR Enter from Edelheid Road at Utility Pole #13.


ORGONON TRAILS:
Located on the property of the late scientist, Wilhelm Reich, these interconnecting loop trails offer 175 acres of self-guided nature trails for hiking or cross-country skiing, and include a bird watching area and educational stations. Open year 'round. Please call ahead for weekend use. Located in the Rangeley area off Route 4 on Dodge Pond Road. For more information, call the Wilhelm Reich Museum at 207-864-3443.


PIAZZA ROCK:
Pick up the Appalachian Trail where it crosses Route 4, 9 miles south of Rangeley, hiking towards Saddleback Mountain. The Piazza Rock is an enormous, flat, overhanging boulder appearing to be balanced in mid-air and supporting the growth of large trees. The "Rock" is a fairly easy 1.4 mile walk through rolling woodland and features a series of boulder caves and secret picnic spots with a lean-to shelter.


RAILROAD LOOP TRAIL:
This 12.5 mile, marked mountain bike trail can be accessed just south of the Rangeley Inn on the gravel road. The last half of the trip has many, long uphill distances.


RANGELY MUNICIPAL TRAILS:
Summer hiking & mountain biking and winter groomed, cross-country skiing trails. No motorized vehicles or camping allowed. Call the Rangeley Recreation Department for further details at 207-864-3326.


RANGELEY OVERLOOK:
Located on Route 17, south of Oquossoc, this is the perfect spot for panoramic views of the town of Rangeley and Rangeley Lake.


SADDLEBACK MOUNTAIN TRAILS:
Excellent views of the Rangeley Lakes Region from a barren summit. There are two different approaches. The first, the A.T. approach, is twice as long as the second, the ski lift approach, but more gradual. The A.T. passes Piazza Rock and several small ponds. Pick up the A.T. on Route 4 south of Rangeley. This is a beautiful hiking trip. The ski lift approach, starts at the Base Lodge, which follows under the big chair lift to the summit. Base to summit: approximately 2 miles. Summit height: 4,120 feet.


SMALLS FALLS: Popular roadside picnic area with several scenic, neighboring waterfalls surrounded by sculptured cliffs on the Sandy River and Chandler Mill Stream. The falls drop 54 feet with swimming and wading pools at the bottom. Cross the footbridge and follow the walking trail along the stream to other falls. Located 12 miles south of Rangeley on Route 4. The area offers picnic tables, grills, and restroom facilities.




SPENCER POND TRAIL: Park in the small turnout. The trail starts just off Route 17, 12.7 miles south of Oquossoc. The trail is a short walk on an old gravel road and great for children! Length of trail: 1 mile each way.


SPOTTED MOUNTAIN TRAIL:
Enter the trail at the end of the paved section of Quimby Pond Road in the Rangeley area. Distance to summit: 4.5 miles.


WEST KENNEBAGO MOUNTAIN TRAIL: This trail offers a hike through hardwoods, spruce trees, conifers and mosses on the way to the summit. Good views from the fire tower. Enter the trail from the marker on Lincoln Pond Road in the Rangeley Region. Distance to the summit: 2.5 miles. Summit height: 3,705 feet.
