Title: Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory
Description: The Fort Knox State historic site and new Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory are one of the area’s most popular visitor attractions.
Fort Knox, a National Historic Landmark is one of the best preserved examples of 19th Century coastal defense fortifications. Built between 1844 and 1867, Fort Knox guarded the mouth of the Penobscot River from what was then feared to be continued British incursions along the river. Fort Knox is constructed of massive granite blocks, miles of intricate brick work and boasts eight 19th Century cannons. Interpretive tours are available or visitors may take a self guided tour of the expansive grounds of Fort Knox. Children love to explore the many dark twisting defensive tunnels of the structure.
The new Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory is located on the Fort Knox Campus. Opened in May 2007, the observatory attracted over 100,000 visitors in its first year. Visitors take a ride up an elevator to 420’ feet for expansive views of Penobscot Bay and beyond. The Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory is the tallest one in the world open to the general public.
Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory are open to the public May 1 to October 31. This attraction is located between Acadia National Park, Bangor and Belfast.
