Come visit Swan Island on the Kennebec River – an island in time – with unique river, forest and meadow habitats for frequent sightings of native wildlife like eagles, white-tailed deer, songbirds, waterfowl, wild turkeys and more! Just 20 minutes south of Augusta, it is a state-owned Wildlife Management Area and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are 6 historic buildings dating back to the 1700 and 1800s still standing along the 4-mile long central dirt road, part of the now extinct Perkins Township. There are miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, an overnight campground and spectacular scenery. This is a fabulous wildlife and nature photography site! Admission fees apply. Open daily May 1- Labor Day by reservation only. Take Exit 43 off I-295 and follow Route 197 East to the intersection of Routes 197 and 24.
