  • : Biking - Jun 16 thru Jun 18 - Newry - Trek Across Maine - Upcoming Oxford County Maine Events
    Join the American Lung Association for the annual Trek Across Maine on Father's Day weekend, June 16 through 18, 2017. From the mountains at Sunday River to the sea in Belfast, cycle 180 miles across the state of Maine. This ride is fully supported by volunteers and trained medical staff, including support vehicles along the route and three rest stops daily . There is a new 2 day option for those of you that can’'t get away for a 3 day vacation. Join us Saturday and Sunday and enjoy the Trek experience. We are always looking for volunteers to help us support the Trek Across Maine. We have many volunteer opportunities available. The route options are as follows: Regular Route starts on Day 1 from Sunday River to University of Maine at Farmington (approximately 67 miles with 3 rest stops located on route); continues on Day 2 at the University of Maine at Farmington to Colby College (approximately 57 miles with 3 rest stops located on route and 1 water stop; concludes on Day 3 starting at Colby College to Belfast (approximately 56 miles with 3 rest stops located on route and last mile staging stop. The Two Day Route starts on Day 1 (June 17) at Colby Loop Route and continues around the Waterville area (approximately 41 miles); continues on Day 2 from Colby College to Belfast (approximately 56 miles). There is also a Colby Loop Route limited to 200 riders with Day 1 from Sunday River to UMF shuttled to Colby College to sleep (approximately 67 miles); continuing Day 2 with the Colby Loop Route around Waterville (approximately 41 miles); and concluding on Day 3 from Colby College to Belfast (approximately 56 miles). Registration is $65 (non-refundable). Three-day fundraising requirement is $550 per person ($400 for ages 7 to 17). Two-day fundraising requirement is $450 per person ($350 for ages 7 to 17). The age limit is 7 years and up. Children between the ages of 7 and 12 must ride a tandem or tag-a-long bike with adult guardian. All children under the age of 18 must have an adult guardian with them at all times on the route. Child and guardian are both required to meet the fundraising minimum.     Get ready for some sizzlin' excitement! Join us for safe and scientific fun with fire and ice! In this show, you'll explore the 3 states of matter and learn about the amazing properties of fire and combustion. Children will see how special Mad Science paper can burn leaving no ash behind and their jaws will drop when they witness our "Swoosh, Whoosh, Aaaah" experiment. After some sizzling chemical reactions heat things up, we will cool off with spectacular demonstrations involving dry ice! We will explore the "Big Burp," the "Sizzling Scissors" and the famous "Mad Science Shower." Children always marvel at the coolness of this frozen gas. All Mad Science shows provide live, interactive and compelling educational experiences that make learning a blast. Performance at 7 p.m.

    Spring Festival is our way of celebrating the warmer weather while the spring skiing is absolutely phenomenal. With beautiful spring weather, plenty of snow, and staple events like the Margarita Mix-Off, Slip 'n' Flip, and live bands, this is not a weekend to miss. All events for this weekend will take place slopeside at White Cap and in White Cap Lodge.     Since 1977 every July the small town of Hiram Maine comes alive in preparation for The Ossipee Valley Fair. The Ossipee Valley Fair is by no means the largest agricultural fair in the state but it is undoubtably the friendliest. Come join us for four days of amusement rides, live stock shows, 4X4 drag races and of course plenty of fried food. All amusement rides are included free with admission.     Watch as firefighters race down the slopes of Sunday River in complete gear while collectively carrying a fire hose in our Fire Fighters Race presented by Bud Light. Teams of five will compete against each other to see who is king of the hill all while raising money for the Sunday River Community Fund. After the race, head to White Cap lodge to partake in our annual "Eat the Heat" Chili contest. Sample chili from the best cooks around the state as they vie for the Best Chili award, voted on by special guest judges.
